Decorating with coffee table books has been the rage for several years. For me it has become the slightest bit of an obsession to the point that I started collecting books. The reason I love decorating with coffee table books is that they can be used all throughout your house not just on the coffee table. (Although, I still use them on my coffee table ALL the time!!)
Placing the books on a tray or simply layering them on your coffee table with a few decorative accessories is such an easy way to fill the space. You can customize it for the season or even by your mood. Since taking down my holiday decorations, I added the new Tom Ford book that my sister gave to me for my birthday with the Elements of Style book my mom gave me for Christmas. Even though I had books on my table before, adding the new books gave it a bit of new life. For a light splash of color, I added a blush colored book with a peach tray. I always try to add some height to this area as well so it doesn’t look too flat. I achieved this by adding a candle and jar of matches.
I get bored really easily with my home decor so one way I like to freshen up my house is by moving my accents around. Even though these pieces were in my house already, by moving them around it makes them feel new again. Stacking books on a shelf is also a great way to fill empty space. It adds interest and layers to a place that is notoriously hard to decorate.
I found this amazing lamp from Lulu and Georgia a few months ago. When I saw it I knew that it would be perfect for my home. However when I received my package, I found that the lamp was a not tall enough for the space. An easy fix was to place the lamp on a few books. It added the height that was needed and a bit of interest. I have even added a few more books since this picture was taken.
Bedside tables are a ideal for placing books. I like to switch out the books depending on who will be staying in the room. If I know that the person is interested in a certain subject, I will use books that they will be able to enjoy. Also, mix up the media by using books and magazines.
In my guest room, I also like to top the books with fresh flowers to make the room smell sweet and look pretty!
Since I like to move my books around a great deal, I also like to play around with the configurations. You don’t have to stack the books so the the spines are facing the same way. If you have a larger book, simply place a smaller book(s) on top and face them a different direction. It is a fun and unexpected way to decorate. Play around with the color combinations of the books. Add a pop of pink on a black book. And of course, you can never go wrong with a bunch of multi-colored ranunculus to add the height I mentioned earlier.
Whenever I am unsure of how I want an area in my home to look, I usually start by adding more books! Using books and a mirrored box in the middle of my long marble console fixed the issue of empty space. I flanked each side of the console with large gold vases. Now it is just perfect!
One of my favorite reasons I love to decorate with books is that it is an inexpensive way to add colors into your home that you wouldn’t normally use.
The best part of interior decorating is to have fun with it! Play around with different colors, textures and heights until you find the perfect configuration.
